Family Class Immigration
A Canadian citizen or permanent resident may sponsor her or his souse, common-law partner or conjugal partner, dependant children, or parent or grandparent to come to Canada as permanent residents. However, as a sponsor, you must promise to support them financially for a certain period of time and ensure that they do not seek financial assistance from the government.
Who can be a sponsor
- Must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident who is older than 18 months
- Must financially support your partner for 3 years
- Must financially support your children for 10 years or until the child turns 25
- May not be eligible to sponsor if you
failed to provide financial support to a relative in the past under this program
Who can be sponsored
- Spouse or partner who promises to do his/her best to become independent
- Partner must be 16 years old
- Must meet medical, security, and other requirements
- Can be parents and grandparents
- Orphaned family members (brother, sister, nephew, niece, or grandchild) under 18
- Sponsor’s children (including, adopted children) under 22
- Or a full-time student before turning 22 and financially dependent on a parent
- Or a financially dependent child since before the age of 22 because of a disability
